Spitfire Update

Story added 12th September 2008 by Fred

Spitfire Update       At the moment we are still replacing rivets non structural as in i.e. the stringers, the bottom skins are off, so that some interior rivets can be replaced the reason for this is that there was some corrosion internally underneath the frames, some repairs are necessary and it would be better to do it now as opposed to wait until about 10 years time when it would have to be stripped off again, it is getting to the point that all the rivets that require changing have been changed. And the clean up is about to take place, dust, oil and 60 years of debris.

The interior then can be painted and all the little brackets etc can be refitted, the team consists of volunteers Mike Page, John Simpson, Clive Abbott-Stone, Roger Kingsley, John Wilson and Dave Yorke. Ian Larriman who is in charge of the project, we can then rivet all the skins back on including those that have had to come off for access. And then hopefully we shall end up with all the controls etc replaced, that should be in the not too distant future,
